Aviles Named Lone Star Goalkeeper of the Year

ALPINE, Texas – Sophomore Benjamin Aviles led the way on the All-Lone Star Conference men's soccer team.  He was one of three Lobos who earned All-LSC honors.

Aviles, who was named to the first team, was selected as Goalkeeper of the Year.  He is the first soccer player, male or female, to win an individual conference award.  Aviles is also the first player in men's program history to earn all-conference first team honors.

Aviles had a record breaking year going 2-4-7 with 60 saves, six shutouts and a 1.08 G.A.A. in 1170 minutes.  He currently leads the LSC in saves and saves per game (4.62), second in shutouts and fifth in G.A.A.

Aviles was named Goalkeeper of the Week for Oct. 6.  He set the single-season school records for G.A.A. and shutouts and set a school record going 350.32 without giving up a goal.

In addition, Aviles was selected to the LSC All-Academic team.  He has a 4.00 G.P.A. majoring in Business Administration.  This is the second straight year that a Lobo has been selected

"Ben did more than enough to earn these awards," said head coach Bailey Guffin.  "The best thing about Ben is he will walk away from this season wanting even more. That means this won't be the last time we see his name amongst the best players in the Lone Star. Six clean sheets, all against LSC opponents, is an extremely tough thing to do. We also have to give credit to his goalkeeper coach, Ryan (Seidon), and the rest of our GK team.  They bring a level to training that pushes Ben to be at his best every day. We are proud of him and are expecting even more next year."

Earning All-Freshmen honors were Jad Basma and Sebastian Martinez.

"JB and Sebastian stepped up in big moments for us this season," said Guffin. "We are glad they are getting the recognition. They are both amongst a very talented young group of players which we are so excited to see grow next year. This core group of freshmen have pushed each other and are prepped to start this new chapter of Lobos."

Basma, a midfielder, was limited to eight games due to injury.  He was a key in the eight-game unbeaten run early in the season including a top performance vs RV St. Mary's.

Martinez, a forward, scored two goals with three assists for seven points in 16 games.  He ranks among the top 10 in single-season history in assists.  Because of his quickness and aggressive moving forward nature, Martinez regularly drew double teams which allowed his teammates to get open.

"What a great moment for our program," said Guffin.  "Everyone worked so hard last spring to get us to this point in the fall. Now the next phase for us is to be playing in the post-season, this time next year."
