Lobos Continue To Move Up The LSC Mountain

ALPINE, Texas. – It was another season of moving forward for the Sul Ross State University men's soccer team. The Lobos went 5-5-7 (2-3-5 Lone Star Conference), had three Lone Star Players of the Week, three All-Lone Star Conference selections, an LSC Academic honoree, an individual LSC award winner, an all-region pick, 10 LSC rankings with two leaders and 30 additions to the record book with 17 school records.

It was a tough schedule as five games were against ranked opponents. Sul Ross State came away with ties against #14 UT Tyler and #16 Dallas Baptist. The Lobos played two teams that qualified for nationals: UC Colorado Springs and Midwestern State (who would go on to win the national championship).

After starting 0-2 against #3 Colorado State Pueblo and #17 UCCS, the Lobos went on a tear. SRSU reeled off an eight game unbeaten streak (5-0-3), the longest in men's or women's soccer program history. They started the run setting school records for goals, assists (5) and points (21) in an 8-0 win over Adams State.

Benjamin Aviles led the way earning All-LSC first team honors and becoming the first soccer player, male or female, to win an individual conference award. He was also the first men's player and just the second player (male or female) to earn all-region honors.

Head coach Bailey Guffin has done an amazing job at turning the Sul Ross State program around. The Lobos have won 11 games with nine ties over the last two years after having just 13 wins with 13 ties in the first six years of the program combined.
