Athletic Training Apprenticeship Program

Sul Ross State University offers an apprenticeship program in athletic training in which students have the opportunity to record hours under the direct supervision of licensed and certified athletic trainers. The apprenticeship also has a specially designed curriculum that allows students to sit for the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration (TDLR) exam.
The athletic training program offers a co-ed environment with the opportunity to work with a variety of sports, including football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, tennis, baseball, softball and rodeo. Students get hands-on experience by being assigned to various sports and being responsible for the care, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries that occur. There is also the opportunity to travel with a sports team for a semester.

Students in the program typically major in Kinesiology with emphasis in athletic training. Students are encouraged to complete their teaching certification in order to be more marketable. Students will also be encouraged to apply to masters programs for athletic training to gain national certification as an athletic trainer.
