Torrez To Take Charge Of Baseball

ALPINE, Texas – Matthew Torrez has been named head coach of the Sul Ross State University Baseball program.  He is set to begin his duties Aug. 27.

Torrez had a very successful run as head coach at Indian Hill Community College (2019-25).  During his tenure, the Warriors won two Regional Championships, qualified for the 2021 NJCAA World Series and won 205 games with a .602 win percentage.  Torrez had 55 All-Region selections and excelled in the classroom as well.  The Warriors had over a 3.00 team GPA every semester, were an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year six times and had 153 Academic All-Region honorees.

Torrez took over at Indian Hills in June 2018 after six very successful seasons at Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado.  His final Trinidad State team went 47-12, was 30-6 in the Empire Conference, and won its 5th consecutive Region IX postseason tournament championship.  Following the season, Torrez was named the Region IX Coach of the Year for the 5th year in a row.

Torrez got his collegiate coaching start at UW Parkside (2002-05).  Among his duties was managing the budget report, recruiting and travel.  Torrez contributed to the Rangers having 14 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selections, GLVC regular season champions (2004), GLVC Tournament Champions (2005) and back-to-back 40+ win seasons and NCAA Tournament appearances.

From 2006 to 2012, Torrez had stops at Darton College, Clarendon College, Barton County College and New Mexico Junior College.

Torrez was the head coach at Trinidad State (2013-18). The Trojans won two conference championships, five NJCAA Regional titles and won 222 games with a winning percentage of .638%.  After going 26-24 his first season, Torrez had five straight seasons with at least 34 wins and over 40 (2016, 18).

His Trinidad State teams turned in solid performances in the classroom as well as on the field.  They had an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher every year he was the head coach at the Colorado school. 

Torrez has a B.S. in Sports Management from UW Parkside and a Master of Education in Sports Administration from East Central. 

A native of Brush, Colorado, Torrez played college baseball at Colby CC (Kansas) and Metro State (Colorado).  He and his wife, Patti, have two children, Austin and Krista and three grandchildren: Camille, Kinsley, and Cade.
