Lobos Begin 2026 Campaign Against Rattlers

Alpine, Texas — Sul Ross State University Baseball opens the 2026 season at home this weekend, hosting St. Mary's University Rattlers for a three-game series at Kokernot Field. The season opener is scheduled for Friday, January 30 at 2:00 PM, followed by game two on Saturday, January 31 at 2:00 PM, before the series concludes Sunday, February 1 with a 1:00 PM first pitch, providing an early opportunity for the Lobos to showcase their growth and set the tone for the 2026 season.

The Lobos enter the new season building off a historic 2025 campaign, their first competing at the NCAA Division II level in the highly competitive Lone Star Conference. In his first year as head coach for Sul Ross State baseball, Coach Caleb Abney made an immediate impact on and off the field, as Sul Ross set multiple program records, including a new single-season stolen base mark with 91 (breaking a record of 81 that had stood for 26 years), recorded the third-most home runs in a single season with 45, and established a new school record with 53 hit-by-pitches. The success extended beyond the diamond as well, with the Lobos earning 39 Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll selections and finishing the season with a 3.15 team GPA, the highest in school history, as Coach Abney enters year two focused on continued growth and development of the Sul Ross State Baseball program.

"This is a hungry group of gritty men who aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and go to work. We will fight with everything we have this year and keep our eyes focused on doing the task that is directly in front of us, and doing it for each other." – Coach Abney Sul Ross State Baseball Head Coach
