Lobos Head To Colorado To Start Season

ALPINE, Texas – The song, "King of the Road" is a very accurate description of the Sul Ross State University men's soccer team.  The Lobos play the first nine games of the season away from Lobo Soccer Field.

Sept. 4 – 7:30 p.m. MT - #17 UC Colorado Springs
The Mountain Lions went 14-3-4 and qualified for the NCAA Division II National tournament.  UCCS was picked to win the RMAC and are 17th in the United Soccer Coaches National Pre-Season Poll.  This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Sept. 6 – 12:00 p.m. MT - #3 Colorado State Pueblo
The Thunderwolves had a strong season in 2024 going 17-4-3, winning the RMAC Tournament and reaching the NCAA DII Semi-Finals.  CSUP was picked to finish third in the RMAC and are third in the United Soccer Coaches National Pre-Season Poll.  This is the first meeting between the two schools.

The Lobos are anticipating another increase in performance.  In 2024, SRSU went from 1-10-5 to 6-9-2.  Experience will be a huge factor with 14 players returning, four of whom started at least 10 games.

Offensively, Sul Ross State returns three of the top five scorers.  Senior Lewis Coates was the third leading scorer and looks to spearhead the attack.

On defense, the Lobos had one of the top three defenses in the conference.  SRSU was second in the LSC for save percentage (.776), saves per game (4.94) and shutouts (6).  Sophomore Benjamin Aviles is back after leading the conference in total saves and setting five season and career school records.  Senior Mario Hurtado was another key component defensively while finishing among the top five on the team in scoring.

Sul Ross State Head Coach Bailey Guffin
"Playing two teams of this caliber shows just how far we've been able to grow our program . We know both teams will bring us challenges. We've had a good pre-season with two wins and two clean sheets. We're eager to keep this momentum going. Looking forward to two big tests for our group."
