The unmistakable sounds of gloves popping and bats cracking returns to Kokernot Field this weekend as the Sul Ross State baseball team takes on the Southwestern University Pirates for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. CST on Friday, Feb. 16.
>> THE LOBOS:
Sul Ross State began the season on the road with games against Texas Lutheran and the University of Dallas.
Last weekend's series in Irving, Texas was cut short due to the rain.
The Lobos are looking to turn things around this week.
Carsen Thor has led the offense early on with a .467 average, seven hits and two doubles.
Thor went 6 for 12 in the season opener at Seguin, Texas, which included a pair 3 for 4 performances.
Sul Ross State has also seen a lot of production out of the duo of
Primo Vasquez and
Aaron Morales, who have combined for eight hits and three RBI.
Pitcher
Gage Cobb has been a workhorse, throwing 11 innings with a team-high seven strikeouts. Cobb dealt a one-hitter with four strikeouts in his first start of the season.
>> SCOUTING THE PIRATES:
This weekend's series is the season opener for the Pirates.
Southwestern finished 25-14 overall and 12-7 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference last spring.
The Pirates made an appearance in the SCAC tournament last season.
This year, the Pirates boast 21 upperclassmen on their roster along with 24 underclassmen.
Last year's squad batted a collective .282 with 10 home runs and 248 runs scored.
