LIVE STATS For the first time in 12 years, Sul Ross State University will be the site of collegiate tournament basketball, hosting the American Southwest Conference men's tournament Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 25-27.
Action in the eight-team, single-elimination tournament begins at noon Thursday (Feb. 25) in the Pete P. Gallego Center. Other quarterfinal contests are scheduled at 2:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 26) semi-final competition starts at 5 p.m., pairing Thursday's game one and game two winners. Game three and game four victors square off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's championship tilt starts at 4 p.m., with the ASC titlist receiving an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III championships.
Sul Ross, led by first-year coach Clif Carroll, won the ASC West Division regular season crown with a 10-4 record (15-9 overall), earning the Lobos the coveted host position. They will play LeTourneau University, 12-13, the ASC East Division's fourth seed, at 7:30 p.m. in Thursday's final game.
Other quarter-final action will pit ASC East third seed Louisiana College, 12-12, vs. ASC West second seed Concordia University Texas, 15-10, in the noon opener; ASC East champion East Texas Baptist University, 20-5, vs. ASC West fourth seed University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 10-15, at 2:30 p.m., followed by ASC West third seed Hardin-Simmons University, 15-10, vs ASC East second seed University of Texas at Dallas, 17-8, at 5 p.m.
"We will have some of the best Division III basketball in the country right here in our 'house,'" said Dr. Bill Kibler, Sul Ross President. "We welcome our visitors to our campus, as well as the unique opportunity for Sul Ross to showcase amazing university, students, faculty/staff, alumni, facilities, and hospitality!"
Tickets are $10 for adults for Thursday's session and $8 for Friday and Saturday sessions. Visiting student admission is $5 per session. Sul Ross students will be admitted free with ID.
Sul Ross previously hosted the 2004 ASC men's tournament, defeating Mississippi College in the title game. The Lobos, coached by Doug Davalos, upended the University of Dallas and Trinity University to advance to the Division III Sweet 16 in
Seattle, WA. Sul Ross ended the season with an overtime setback to Lawrence (WI) University.
In his first season as head coach
Clif Carroll led Sul Ross State to its first West Division title since 2005 and fourth overall. The Lobos have a 3-6 tournament record and make their eighth tournament appearance. SRSU won the ASC championship the same season they previously hosted the event in 2004.
Sul Ross enters the tournament coming off its best regular season record in the West Division (10-4) since a 13-9 mark in 2006. Under Carroll, SRSU is the most improved team in the ASC moving from five to 10 conference wins and just five overall wins a year ago to 15 this season. Sophomore
Caleb Thomasson leads SRSU in rebounds (8.4) and, ranked fifth in the ASC and in scoring (13.6) at 17th in the league. Senior
Rocky Feliciano was near perfect from the foul line this season hitting 102-of-111 for a league-best .919 percentage. Feliciano also wrote his name in the ASC record book three times for perfect games at charity stripe hitting all 13, 14 and 16 shots in three separate contests.
