Lobos Gallop Past Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Junior Camren Roper had a triple-double and there was a team milestone as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (3-16 Lone Star Conference, 5-20) beat Midwestern State (6-13 LSC, 8-18), Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.  This was the first win over the Mustangs in program history.

For the first 11 minutes, 30 seconds, Midwestern State was in control.  The Mustangs had the lead, 20-12 at the 8:30 mark.

Freshman Steph Yosia scored off a fast break to end a run of 13 straight points.  That put the Lobos up 25-20 with four minutes to go.  SRSU led 35-27 at halftime.

Junior Antwonne Holmes scored off a rebound at the 19:49 mark to make it 37-27.  Sul Ross State led by at least 10 points all but 14 seconds of the second half.

The Lobos used its aggressive defense to shut down the Mustangs, holding them to 40% from the floor and 0.91% on 3-pointers (the second lowest total this season).  SRSU scored 29 points off 18 turnovers.  The Lobos got great production from the bench with 50 points.

For Sul Ross State, senior Chianti Clay scored 21 points with five triples, junior Ernests Locmelis scored 15 points with four treys and Holmes had 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. 

Roper had 16 points while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor, 14 rebounds (12 defensive), 11 assists and three steals.  He is the first Lobo in program history to have a triple double.

For Midwestern State, Terrance Ramirez had 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Sul Ross State closes the season out on the road, Saturday, Feb. 28, taking on #9 Lubbock Christian.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
