Lobos Slug It Out With Hilltoppers

ALPINE, Texas – Senior Chianti Clay scored 20+ points as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (2-15 Lone Star Conference, 4-19) lost 88-72 to #14 St. Edward's (13-6 LSC, 24-6), Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

St. Edward's came out fast getting to a 28-8 lead at the 9:22 mark.  Sul Ross State began to chip away.  Junior Ernests Locmelis knocked one down from the international zone.

That finished a 19-7 burst to make it 35-27 with 3:43 to go.  The Hilltoppers pushed the lead to 43-32 at halftime.

In the second half, Clay dropped one in from El Paso to make it 44-38 at the 18:53 mark.  SEU scored four straight points and led by at least eight the rest of the way.

The Lobos were sizzling on 3-pointers shooting 40%.  SRSU pulled down 22 defensive rebounds to just six offensive for the Hilltoppers.

For Sul Ross State, Clay had 22 points with six 3-pointers while junior Antwonne Holmes had 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.

For St. Edward's, Jamison Kay had 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Sul Ross State takes to the road, Tuesday, Feb. 24, taking on UT Dallas.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
