Canaba To Step Down From Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas – Troy Canaba will be resigning as Assistant A.D. of Operations and head coach of the Sul Ross State University softball team at the conclusion of the 2025 season.  He is leaving to pursue an opportunity outside of coaching.

Troy Canaba
"I want to begin by expressing my deepest gratitude to Amanda Workman, Dr. Hernandez, and Sul Ross State University for their unwavering support throughout my time here. Amanda's vision and leadership have transformed the athletic department in so many ways, and I'm excited to see where the future takes it.

A special thank you to Bobby Mesker for hiring me and giving me the incredible opportunity to coach at the college level. He took a chance on me, and I sincerely hope I've lived up to that trust. Sul Ross will always hold a special place in my heart.
To my players, thank you. Please know that I love you all. To my family, your love and support have meant the world to me.  I truly believe that I've left Sul Ross and the softball program in a better place. I'm incredibly proud of all we've accomplished together, and I will forever cherish my time here."

Canaba has turned the softball program around during his 10+ seasons in charge.  The Lobos had 80 wins and no winning seasons in the first 16 years of the program.  During his tenure, several improvements were made to the facility including the addition of batting cages, bullpens, dugouts and an upgraded sound system.

Canaba has won 140 games, posted four winning seasons, held the top seven winningest seasons and helped the Lobos qualify for the American Southwest Conference Tournament four times.  His victories rank second among all coaches in all sports in the NCAA era.  All but three of the single-season individual records at Sul Ross State were set under Canaba's tenure.

His team has produced 50 All-ASC and 94 All-Academic selections.  He has been the recipient of the Sul Ross State Academic Excellence in Coaching twice.  Nine out of his 10 years in the department, his programs boasted the highest team GPA.

Canaba was also the volleyball head coach for the Lobos (2017-23).  He took over a program that had just 28 wins in the previous 11 seasons and won 58 games in seven years.  In 2021, Canaba guided the Lobos to their first winning season in 16 years as well as qualifying for the ASC Tournament for the first time in 15 years.  He was named ASC Coach of the Year that season.

His program produced three ASC individual award winner, a two-time All-AVCA regional selection, 18 All-ASC and 56 all-academic selections.

Sul Ross State Athletic Director Amanda Workman
"It's hard to sum up the impact that someone like Coach Canaba has on Sul Ross State University. He has shown so many of us what it means to be a loyal Lobo and has such rich history with the department. While I celebrate his success and will continue to root for him from afar, I will miss his passion and dedication to our program. He truly is a Sul Ross legend and will be greatly missed."

Originally from Sierra Blanca, Texas he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Sul Ross. Canaba also played basketball at Sul Ross State (1998-99).
