MEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos look to finish strong at home

As three games remain on the 2023-2024 schedule, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team is trying to finish on a high note with its first winning record since the 2019-2020 season.
 
The Lobos host LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist on Thursday and Saturday for the final homestand of the season.
 
>> THE LOBOS:
 
Sul Ross State is also seeking to sport its first winning record at home since the 2021-2022 season.
 
Trey Nelson currently has 945 career points, just 55 points away from joining the 1,000-point club.
 
Tyler Jackson leads the Lobos in scoring with 305 points, 137 rebounds, 78 made free throws and 112 made field goals.
 
Jackson ranks ninth in the American Southwest Conference in rebounding and fourth in made free throws.
 
He has averaged 19.2 points in his last four games, which included a double-double performance against Concordia where he tallied 28 points and 16 rebounds.
 
Gabe Sanchez leads the squad with 49 made three-pointers and a free throw percentage of 86% while he ranks second in scoring with 274 points.
 
Sanchez set a career-high mark this season by scoring 26 points back on Dec. 7 against McMurry.
 
Myles Amason has played a solid second half. Amason ranks third in the conference with 31 blocked shots.
 
He had a season-high six blocks against the Ozarks and the University of Texas at Dallas on Jan. 18 and Jan. 20, respectively.
 
Amason has scored double-digit figures in five games during the second half.
 
The freshman had a breakout game against Hardin-Simmons on Dec. 9 where he had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Hayden Peterson leads the team with 25 steals while Manny Flores ranks first in assists with 55.
 
>> SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
 
LeTourneau has won its last two games by single digits. The Yellowjackets defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor in overtime by one point back on Jan. 27.
 
The Yellowjackets most recently beat East Texas Baptist, 65-63.
 
LeTourneau has been led by the duo of Deonte Jackson and Caedmon Liebengood. The pair has scored a combined 685 points.
 
Jackson averages 22.6 points a game as he leads his team with 361 points.
 
East Texas Baptist has won three of its last four games.
 
The Tigers were on a three-game winning streak, which included a seven-point win over Mary Hardin-Baylor and a one-point overtime victory over Concordia.
 
Darry Moore leads East Texas Baptist with 375 points and 180 rebounds.
 
The Lobos are trying to get even with LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist after losing by deficits 13 and four, respectively, during the week of Jan. 4.
 
>> SENIOR DAY:
 
This week is the final homestand for eight Lobos.
 
Sanchez, Peterson and Nelson join Deveraux Minix, Omar Ibarra, Larry Morrison, Bryson Laird and Jordan Rhyne as the Lobos who will be honored during Saturday's senior day festivities.

In addition to Saturday's senior day festivities, it will also be a black out game as fans are encouraged to wear black.
