Holding a 10-8 record, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team is not satisfied until it reaches the ultimate goal of finishing the season with a winning record.
The Lobos have seven games left in the season, four of which will be at home.
This week Sul Ross State gets a rematch with Hardin-Simmons and McMurry on Thursday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 27.
>> THE LOBOS:
The Lobo pack is in the hunt for the first winning season since the 2019-2020 season.
Tyler Jackson leads the squad with 228 points scored, 103 total rebounds and 86 field goals made in 331 minutes played.
He ranks 14th in the American Southwest Conference in scoring, 12th in rebounding, 11th in made field goals, second in field goal percentage (60%) and eighth in made free throws (53).
Gabe Sanchez is tied for fifth in the ASC in made three-pointers (41). Sanchez ranks second on the team in scoring with 223 points.
Sanchez is just 34 points shy of reaching 600 career points.
Manny Flores,
Trey Nelson and
Omar Ibarra make up the top three leaders in assists for the Lobos. Flores has 43 while Nelson and Ibarra have 42 and 40, respectively.
Nelson is 76 points away from joining the 1,000-point club. He currently has a career 924 points.
Myles Amason has played solid in his last three games, scoring 10 or more points in all three games while also tallying 13 blocks.
Amason is tied for second in the conference with 27 blocked shots.
Hayden Peterson leads the Lobos with 22 steals.
As a team, the Lobos are sixth in the ASC in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage (45%), first in rebounding (705) and first in assists (320).
>> SCOUTING HARDIN-SIMMONS:
The Cowboys received seven votes in the d3hoops.com top 25 poll, the only team in the ASC to do so this week.
The Cowboys have suffered only three losses this season to the University of St. Thomas (Texas), Trinity University (Texas) and Concordia.
Hardin-Simmons won its last two games by close margins over East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau.
Will Bartoszek is the conference's top scorer, averaging 23.5 points a game.
Last time Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State met, the Cowboys came away with a six-point victory in Abilene, Texas.
>> SCOUTING MCMURRY:
The War Hawks are riding a three-game skid, all three games were decided by single digits.
McMurry dropped to Mary Hardin-Baylor by one and then fell to LeTourneau in a high-scoring 110-106 overtime contest.
Most recently, the War Hawks dropped a four-point decision to East Texas Baptist.
C.J. LeBlanc leads the offense with 434 points scored as he averages 18.1 a game while he also leads the team with 70 made three-pointers.
McMurry has five players averaging 12 or more points a game.
Sul Ross State is seeking to avenge a 102-92 loss suffered back on Dec. 7 in Abilene, Texas.
>> CONFERENCE OUTLOOK:
Hardin-Simmons is 14-3 overall and 8-1 in ASC play as it sits atop of the field in first place.
The next six spots are highly contested with the University of Texas at Dallas (10-7, 6-2), LeTourneau (11-7, 6-4), Mary Hardin-Baylor (9-7, 5-4), East Texas Baptist (9-9, 5-5), Concordia (7-10, 4-5) and Howard Payne (10-8, 4-6).
If this was a normal season for the Lobos they would be 4-7 in conference play and right in the middle of a tight race.
