LAS CRUCES, N.M. — In front of a crowd of 4,507 at the Pan American Center on Wednesday night, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team kicked off its season with an exhibition game against Division I New Mexico State University.
Despite NMSU having the height and size advantage, the Lobos went toe-to-toe in the opening half, leading 18-14 with 11:34 on the clock and trailing by just eight at the half.
The Aggies ended up taking the victory, 84-49.

Gabe Sanchez came out with the hot hand as he knocked down 20 points and six 3-pointers in the first half. Sanchez also had two steals in the opening half.
Trey Nelson added with seven points, three assists and two steals.
All 19 players that suited up and made the trip got to play in the contest.
Sanchez finished with 22 points and two rebounds while Nelson chipped in with 12 points and two boards.
Manny Flores was the leading rebounder, grabbing five defensive boards.
Myles Amason and
Tyler Jackson each had three rebounds. The Lobos grabbed 26 total rebounds with 22 coming on the defensive end.
Sul Ross State also tallied 10 assists, five steals and one blocked shot.
