Familiar with this time of year, Sul Ross men's hoops enters the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the sixth time in seven seasons.
The 2022 ASC Tournament is February 24-26, hosted by Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Sul Ross enters as the #7 seed. They now prepare for an ASC Quarterfinals clash with #2 LeTourneau on Thursday, February 24 at 2:30 p.m. in Belton, TX.
This will be the sixth appearance in seven seasons for the Lobos, the second under the guidance of head coach
Xavier Webb.
"It's the culture of building around excellence and striving for championships at the end of every year," said Webb. "It's been around since I've been a player. Establishing that culture of toughness."
"The team has really clicked into gear at the right time and I am proud of their efforts," said President Pete Gallego.
Sully finished the regular season 10-15 and 7-13 in conference play under second-year head coach
Xavier Webb. Not indicative of their record, the Lobos played incredibly competitive for a large stretch of the conference season. Seven of their conference losses came by less than eight points, including a pair of two-point overtime losses.
"We knew we were going to go through growing pains with some of the new faces. With us being close in so many games, it's a testament to our upperclassmen and senior leadership for keeping us in those close games. This is very valuable as we have learned to both win and lose in tight situations."
The Lobos saw three players, all upperclassmen, average double digits this season.
Julian Paredes led the Lobos with 15.7 points per game. He also averaged a team-high 8.2 rebounds and seven blocks.
Trey Nelson had a stellar second season. He more than doubled his points per game from 7.2 last season to 14.7 this season. He led the team in free throw percentage (82%), assists with 79 and steals with 38.
Logan Dixon finished with 12.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
As a team, Sully shot 41% from the floor, 35% from three, and 72% from the line.
"It's a testament to their dedication and hard work from the summer to the season. First semester we struggled to shoot the ball. As the year went along, our new faces stepped up. Our ball is moving a lot better. It helped create more in-rhythm shots for Julian, Trey and Logan."
Last season, the Lobos as the #4 seed in the West Division. They fell 94-71 to Hardin-Simmons in the ASC Quarterfinals.
"We're going to learn from our mistakes, especially from my own. I got too gung-ho about the tournament and not the game itself. This time around we're focused on LeTourneau and LeTourneau only."
Sul Ross was bested by LeTourneau twice this season, both by slim margins.
The Yellowjackets first won 67-58 on December 2, 2021 in Longview.
Their next battle was even closer. A game that saw 10 ties and eight leads changes ultimately went 98-96 to LeTourneau in overtime on January 22. Nelson finished with a then career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds. He'd eventually eclipse that point total with 28 on February 5 against East Texas Baptist.
"Both games were extremely close. The game here was a fun battle. Moving forward to the third time, we like our matchup. They're very guard heavy and so are we. It'll be a very fast-paced, fun game to watch. There are two extremely good players that know how to score. We need to limit their open looks."
