Sul Ross State University mourns the passing and remembers the life of Randy Jackson, a longtime supporter of the University and of Lobo Athletics.
Jackson graduated from Sul Ross with a BA in 1968 and MA in 1970 before becoming one of the University's first recruiters.
"Wherever he was, he never stopped recruiting," said Sul Ross President Pete Gallego. "Once back in Alpine after retirement, he still recruited — and he always advocated for and helped our students. We miss him already."
Jackson was named the first ever Mr. Sul Ross in 2021 during an October 9, 2021, pregame ceremony during football's homecoming. President Gallego awarded the honor to Jackson for his loyalty, love and continuing dedication to Sul Ross.
Randy and his wife Sherry were inducted into the Sul Ross Hall of Honor in 2019 as Outstanding Supporters. Over the years, the Jacksons purchased several banners for athletics events and helped raise funds for game jerseys and trips for football seniors to attend various postseason all-star games. They also led fundraising efforts to purchase rings for the 2017-18 American Southwest Conference Champion Men's Basketball team.
Jackson also assisted the sports information department as a stand-in photographer and organized several tailgates for former student-athletes and alumni.
In 2007, the Jacksons started a newsletter called "From the Hill." It was distributed to old friends, baby boomers, and other interested individuals about current events at Sul Ross. It grew to have a larger circulation than many university publications.
During the most recent meeting of the Texas State University Board of Regents, the Regents themselves honored Randy Jackson and his efforts on behalf of Sul Ross by naming the football field house at Jackson Field as the

"This is just a small token of appreciation to a man who had a larger-than-life impact on our students, athletes, and this entire University," said Gallego.
