Video Preview: Runnin' Pack opens slate next week at Whitman

With the season starting in just over a week, coach Clif Carroll and the Sul Ross State University Men's basketball team are making final preparations for their opener November 16 against Whitman College.

The Lobos will be led by sophomore guard Tristen Licon. Licon, last season's ASC West Division Newcomer of the Year, was also a 2017-18 ASC Second Team All-Conference choice. Licon led the ASC in three-point field goal percentage at .536 and broke an ASC single season record of .505 set by Dylan Augustine of East Texas Baptist University in the 2013-14 season.

He scored a career-high 21 points in an 88-64 conference victory over visiting McMurry University on January 18.

Licon nailed a game-winning three-pointer lifting Sul Ross to a thrilling 97-95 ASC win over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton on January 27.

Forward B.J. Hollis returns for his junior campaign and was named a 2017-18 ASC West Division Honorable Mention. Hollis averaged a third-team best 10.3 points per game. He led the team in free throws converting 44 of 51 shots from the stripe for a percentage of .863.

Newcomers dotting the 2018-19 roster include freshman post Brayden Fry. A graduate of Sanford-Fritch High School, Fry earned Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-State, All-Region and All-District recognition his senior season. Fry also picked up All-Region and All-District honors as a junior.

Forward Jack Kirkpatrick makes his Sul Ross debut in 2018-19. A graduate of Frenship High School near Lubbock, Kirkpatrick was an All-District selection and also earned Team MVP and was chosen to the Panhandle Plains Super Team his senior season. He was also selected as the Team Offensive MVP his junior season. Kirkpatrick was named an Academic All-District selection as a junior and also received an Academic All-State honor as a senior.

The Lobos, last year's American Southwest Conference champions, were selected as the top finisher in the American Southwest Conference West Division in a preseason poll released in October. Sully finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 22-7 record including a 14-3 mark in conference competition.

Last year's finish earned Carroll his third straight ASC West Division Coach of the Year award.

Highlights include comments from Licon, Kirkpatrick and Carroll.
