EL PASO- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) scored a team-high 20 points as the Sul Ross men's basketball team fell, 78-70 to Division I U.T. El Paso in a Saturday afternoon exhibition.

The Miners put up a 4-0 run to begin the contest.

The Lobos responded with a 6-0 attack which ended on a three-point bucket by Gary Ringo, JR. (Midland/MHS) for a 10-9 Sul Ross advantage.

UTEP went on to hold a five-point lead before Sully closed the gap and knotted the contest at 17 with a three-pointer by B.J. Hollis (Brady/BHS) with 9:26 left in the first half.

A pair of free throws by Stephen Walker (Houston/Taylor) and a long range jumper by Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) put the Lobos ahead, 22-19 at the 6:57 mark, first half.

A handful of lead changes followed before an old-school three-point play by C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) tied the contest at 34 heading to intermission.

Back-to-back foul shots by Thomasson started the second period with Sul Ross sporting a 36-34 advantage.

Thomasson knocked down two more free throws at 18:10 for a 38-36 Lobo lead.

The Miners rallied with a 7-0 run over the next three and a half minutes and went on to post a pair of 16-point advantages.

The Lobos slowly chipped away at their deficit and ended the game on a 4-0 capped by a midrange jumper by Conner Dawson (Tilden/McMullen County).

For the game, Sul Ross shot 35 percent from the field including 26 percent shooting from outside the arc. Sully hit 25 of 31 shots from the stripe at 81 percent.

The Lobos will play their final exhibition game at Tarleton State November 14 before opening up regular season competition in Marshall against Louisiana College, November 16.
