Sully riding high entering four-game home stretch

Winning on the road in the American Southwest Conference is never an easy task.

Facing their longest road trip of the season and a traditional conference powerhouse Sul Ross (6-6, 4-1)battled its way through two conference victories as the Lobos defeated University of the Ozarks, 80-77 over the weekend and tripped U.T. Dallas 78-71 Monday handing the Comets their first home loss of the season.

Sully will now enter a long awaited four-game home stand beginning this Thursday as the West Division-leading Lobos host conference newcomer Belhaven University in a 7:30 p.m. nightcap. Sul Ross will then square off with East Texas Baptist at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Gallego Center.

Thursday's matchup against the Blazers will not count as an ASC contest due to Belhaven's provisional membership status in the conference.

RECAP

Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) collected 15 points and eight rebounds as Sul Ross beat University of the Ozarks in an 80-77 conference road outing Saturday.

Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) notched a double double with 12 points and 10 boards while teammate Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) supplied 12 points of his own in the victory.

Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) and Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) tallied 11 and 10 points each on the afternoon as the Lobos converted over half their shots from the floor, 35 of 65 or 54 percent.

The Lobos then shot a season high 29 of 51 from the field at 57 percent to claim a 78-71 conference road win over U.T. Dallas Monday in Richardson.

The Lobos were also red-hot from outside the arc hitting a season best 10 of 17 at 59 percent. Sully missed just three of 13 shots from the free throw line good for 77 percent.

Individually Harrison saddled 19 points to lead the scoring attack and led rebounders with nine boards.

Feliciano finished with 17 points while Webb and Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) rounded out double figure scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS AND TIGERS

At 2-8 on the season Belhaven picked up its second victory on Monday with a 72-71 skimming of visiting McMurry.

Josh Carpenter led scorers with 22 points while De'la Mayers fueled the attack at the boards with 10 rebounds.

Monday's win over McM snapped a three-game skid for Belhaven. The Blazers first victory came on December 3 as BU surprised visiting Mary Hardin-Baylor in a thrilling 96-88 double overtime victory.

Carpenter also bagged 22 points against the Crusaders and is second leading scorer for Belhaven averaging 15 points per game.

Josh Gaskin leads the team with a 16.1 points-per-game average while Mayers averages 13.6 points per contest and is team leader in rebounds at 7.6.

East Texas Baptist currently sits in second place in the Conference East at 8-3 and 2-1.

The Tigers are coming off a two-game losing streak following a 101-91 home overtime loss against Concordia on January 2.

Junior Mitchell led ETBU in that game with 26 points. Wilbert Thomas scored a double double 16 points and 11 boards in a 69-54 loss against Texas Lutheran in the Tigers' final game of 2015 on December 30.

The Bulldogs defeated ETBU in the first of a two-game season series on November 28 in a 79-78 edging. 

Bret Atkins led the Tigers in the loss with 26 points while Thomas pulled down 10 boards. Atkins put up a season best 27 points in a win over Louisiana College on December 10.

Mitchell currently leads East Texas Baptist averaging 14.5 points per game while Jamil Samuel enters the game at 13.9. Atkins sports a 12.8 points per contest average and is leading rebounder at 10.3.

LOBOS TOP ASC IN 3-POINT FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE

The Lobos entered Monday's game against the Comets shooting a league-best 37.8 percent from beyond the arc while UTD was second in the ASC (37.7percent).

Sully has hit 67 of 222 shots from three-point distance for the season with a three-point field goal percentage .302. The Lobos are averaging 5.6 converted three-pointers per contest.

Feliciano continues to lead the Pack averaging 12.6 points per game. He also holds the best free throw percentage in the American Southwest Conference at 61-66 or .924.

Harrison and Thomasson are currently averaging 11.7 and 10.8 points per game respectively. Thomasson is team leader in rebounds at 8.4.

UPCOMING

Sul Ross will finish this month's four-game home stand next week as the Lobos play host to McMurry and Hardin-Simmons January 14 and 16.

Sully hits the road January 21 and 23 to visit Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor and will close out  the month on January 30 at home against Howard Payne.
