Lobo men to host Howard Payne this weekend

In a rare one-game week this week the Sul Ross Lobos will have plenty of time to prepare for Saturday's bout against Howard Payne minus a usual Thursday night contest.

Sully (10-8, 6-3 ASC) will battle the Yellow Jackets at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday at the Gallego Center as the Lobos are fresh off a 1-1 road split last week against Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Sul Ross currently maintains a first place standing in the Conference West, just half a game ahead of Hardin-Simmons.

Saturday's contest can be heard live on KVLF AM 1240.

RECAP

Freshman Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) scored a team best and season high 20 points as Sul Ross dropped a 106-96 American Southwest Conference game Thursday night to Concordia in Austin.

Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) put up 17 points for the Lobos while Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey), Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) and Xavier Webb (Riverton,WY/RHS) scored 16, 12 and 11 points respectively in the effort.

Sully left several points at the free throw line finishing at 23 of 43 or 54 percent. The Lobos finished the evening shooting 35-65 or 54 percent from the floor which tied their performance at the foul line.

Things looked even dimmer during the first half of Saturday's outing at Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Things quickly turned to the Lobos' favor, though, as Sul Ross scored 60 points in the second half and rallied to defeat the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 85-75 Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center.

With the win the Lobos maintain their first place standing in the ASC West up by half a game over Hardin-Simmons.

Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) scored a season high 24 points and collected 11 rebounds for a double double.

Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) also posted a double double 19 points and 13 boards while Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) and Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) supplied 20 and 13 points respectively.

The Lobos shot lights-out basketball in the second half nailing 17 of 25 from the field at 68 percent and finished the day at 48 percent shooting.

Sully converted an astounding eight of 10 from outside the arc in the second half and converted nine of 18 three-pointers for the contest.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

Howard Payne (7-11, 3-5 ASC) sits in fourth place in the West and just a game ahead of UMHB (6-11, 3-5).

The Jackets fell in their last two games on the road last week.

Howard Payne dropped an 88-76 decision to UMHB Thursday before falling to Concordia's high octane scoring attack in a 111-94 setback to the Tornadoes over the weekend.

Despite the loss in Austin Khyce Randall scored a season high 33 points against CTX. Ricky Guillory notched a team best 22 points and was just two rebounds shy of a double double in the loss Thursday at Mary Hardin-Baylor.

HPU TEAM NOTES
  • Randall leads all Jackets scorers averaging 16.7 points per contest including 17.1 points per game against ASC foes.
  • Randall also has the nod as leading rebounder with 115 boards on the season with a 6.4 rebounds per game average.
  • Guillory is only four boards behind Randall with 111 season rebounds and is second leading scorer at 13.7 ppg.
  • J Bailey isone rebound behind Guillory with 110 on the season.
  • As a team the Yellow Jackets rank fourth in the ASC in scoring defense at 76.2 points per game.
  • HPU is second in offensive rebounds with 783 offensive boards (43.5 orpg.).
  • The Jackets rank second in the conference in defensive rebounds at 669 (37.2 drpg.).
  • Howard Payne has the third highest rebounding margin in the ASC at +6.3.

UPCOMING

Following Saturday's home game against HPU Sul Ross will head to Abilene for a pair of ASC contests next week as the Lobos visit Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
