Lobos set to battle War Hawks and West leader HSU

Sul Ross will finish a four-game home stand this week as the Lobos host McMurry and Hardin-Simmons this Thursday and Saturday.

Sully posted a 1-1 record last week following an 82-75 victory over Belhaven and a 67-64 late-game setback to East Texas Baptist.

Both games can be heard live on KVLF AM 1240 with internet audio provided at bigbendradio.com.

Thursday's contest against McMurry will not count as an official ASC game as the War Hawks are currently provisional members of the conference and will not be eligible for post season play.

RECAP

Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) finished with a career best 23 points to lead the Sul Ross men's basketball team to an 82-76 victory over Belhaven Thursday at the Gallego Center.

Dawson was almost perfect from the free throw line at 12 of 14 and was five of 10 from the field.

Other Lobos in double figures include Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) with 22 points and Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) with 10. Thomasson led the rebounding game for Sul Ross pulling down six boards.

The Lobos nailed half of their shots from the floor Thursday night at 26 of 52 including a 37 percent showing from outside the arc.

East Texas Baptist snapped a five-game Lobo winning streak Saturday with a 67-64 conference victory over Sul Ross at the Gallego Center.

Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) and Thomasson posted 15 points each in the effort while Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) scored 10.

Thomasson led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Lobos shot 46 percent from the field against ETBU. It marked the first time in five contests that Sul Ross was held under 50 percent shooting.

SCOUTING THE WAR HAWKS AND COWBOYS

Former Cowboy standout Zach Pickelman is in his first year at the helm of the McMurry men's program taking over for current Lobo head coach Clif Carroll.

The War Hawks are 2-13 on the season after a 1-1 home split last week against University of the Ozarks and U.T. Dallas.

LaRandall Scroggins scored a double double 20 points and 11 rebounds to pace McMurry in an 81-73 victory over Ozarks last Thursday.

Nate Estrada led the War Hawks with 14 points Saturday in a 72-42 loss to U.T. Dallas.

McMurry picked up their first season win on November 21 in a 68-67 skimming of former ASC opponent Schreiner University.

Estrada served as leading scorer in the contest with 17 points.

McM TEAM NOTES
  • As leading scorer Estrada averages 14 points per game heading into Thursday's bout with the Lobos.
  • Estrada posted two, 18-point performances which were good for season highs in a 115-68 loss to Division II Angelo State on December 14 and a 72-71 defeat at Belhaven on January 4.
  • The War Hawks currently rank fifth  in the ASC in three-point field goal percentage at .349.
  • McMurry ranks sixth in assists and steals at 217 (14.5 apg) and 107 (7.1 spg)
Meanwhile the Cowboys (10-4, 5-1 ASC) sit in a tight race with Sul Ross for first place in the Conference West. Hardin-Simmons is currently in the driver's seat atop the division and is on a six win run heading into Thursday night's game at Howard Payne.

The Cowboys won a two-game home stretch last week with a 69-64 victory over U.T. Dallas and a 112-91 win over Ozarks.

Dashun Dixon led the team with 30 points in the win over the Eagles while Justin Jones scored a team best 23 points against UTD.

HSU TEAM NOTES
  • Justin Jones  is leading scorer for Hardin-Simmons averaging 15.4 points per contest and posts a 15.3 ppg average against ASC opponents.
  • Jones's 23 points against U.T. Dallas was just a point behind his season high of 24 in an 80-74 loss at Southwestern.
  • At 10.4 rebounds per contest Jones is the second leading rebounder for HSU
  • Nathaniel Jack leads the team in rebounds at 11.7 and averages 12.3 boards a game against league opponents.
  • As a team the Cowboys lead the ASC in offensive rebounds averaging 45.7 offensive boards per contest and also in defensive boards at 32.1 (449-season total).
  • HSU leads the conference in blocks with 93 on the season and averages 6.6 blocks per game.
  • HSU ranks first in the ASC in made three-point shots at 145 (10.4 pg)
  • Jack enters Thursday's game in Brownwood as the leading rebounder for Hardin-Simmons (11.7 rpg)
  • Jones leads the league in blocks with 63 (4.5 bpg).

  • Sul Ross currently sports  the third best shooting percentage in the ASC at .454.
  • The Lobos boast the second best defensive rebound total in the conference at 522 and averages 37.3 defensive boards per game.
  • Feliciano continues to lead the ASC in free throws at 61-66 with a .924 free throw percentage.
  • Harrison currently ranks 12th out of the top 15 assist leaders in the conference with a season total of 33 (2.8 apg)
  • Harrison is tied with Louisiana College's Kevin Lewis and Belhaven's Josh carpenter ranking 14th in the league in steals at 17 (1.4 spg)
  • Thomasson is fourth in the ASC in blocks at 26 and averages 1.9 blocks per contest.
  • Thomasson is seventh out of the top 15 leading defensive rebounders with a season tally of 87 (6.2 pg).
 
UPCOMING

The Lobos will find themselves in Austin and Belton next week facing Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor following this week's action against the War Hawks and Cowboys.
