Sul Ross State to Face UTRGV in Historic 2025 Season Opener

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State University Football Team will open their 2025 football season on the road with a historic matchup against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, August 30, at 7:00 PM at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg, Texas.

This contest marks the first football game in UTRGV history, setting the stage for one of the most unique and anticipated season openers in Texas college football.

The 2025 season is also a milestone for Sul Ross State, as the program enters the final year of its NCAA Division II provisional period. Competing as a member of the Lone Star Conference (LSC), the Lobos continue to build toward full NCAA DII membership and future postseason eligibility.

Lobos Preparing for the Challenge
Under the leadership of first-year head coach Lee Hays, Lobos are looking to start strong. The team blends returning veterans with promising newcomers, focusing on discipline, energy, and resilience to meet the challenge of a program debuting in front of a home crowd.
  • Offense: Junior offensive lineman Travyon Young, an LSC Player to Watch, anchors the front after starting all 10 games last season. Quarterback Andrew Martinez ranks fifth in school history in completions (296), attempts (531), passing yards (3,795), and touchdowns (30), providing experience and firepower to a potentially explosive attack.
  • Defense: Senior defensive back Brendon Martin leads a determined unit after posting 78 total tackles, three interceptions (one for a touchdown), and earning All-LSC Second Team honors in 2024.
UTRGV's First Step
Led by head coach Travis Bush, UTRGV begins its long-awaited football journey. With no previous game film or track record, Vaqueros' mix of transfers and young talent adds unpredictability to this matchup.
