SRSU advances in Division II membership process

Newest Lone Star Conference member Sul Ross State continues its transition to NCAA Division II after receiving approval to move ahead to year two of its three-year provisional membership. The decision by the Division II Membership Committee is effective on September 1.

Sul Ross State officially began its LSC membership on July 1 and is projected to complete transition from Division III to Division II with the start of the 2026-27 academic year.

The 12 SRSU athletics teams begin LSC competition in fall 2024 and are eligible for regular-season league championships and awards. Teams and individuals remain ineligible for NCAA postseason until earning full Division II member status.

Within the Lone Star Conference, SRSU university and athletics administrators, staff and coaches are engaged in the conference governance structure.

"Sul Ross State University is committed to a successful transition to Division II," said President Carlos Hernandez. "This is not only about athletics as we believe whole-heartedly that the move to Division II will benefit every aspect of enrollment and retention and play a major role in our many growth initiatives."

Director of Athletics Amanda Workman noted the work of university administration and athletics staff in putting SRSU in position for a successful transition to Division II.

"This is a challenging process for all involved but it is absolutely worth our time and effort to ensure success for our student-athletes, coaches and the institution," Workman said. "We are doing all we can to ensure a smooth transition and we're excited with the progress made so far. We eagerly await Division II competition this fall and welcome Lone Star Conference institutions to Alpine."

The Lobos' first scheduled Lone Star Conference competition comes August 29 when the SRSU hosts West Texas A&M in football.
