11 Lobos named ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes

A total of 11 Sul Ross State student-athletes were named to the American Southwest Scholar-Athlete team in their respective sports.
A total of 11 Sul Ross State student-athletes were named to the American Southwest Scholar-Athlete team in their respective sports.

Julian Paredes earned ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for men's basketball.

>> BASEBALL:

First baseman Carsen Thor led the Lobos with six home runs and 37 RBI. He sported a .331 clip with 45 hits, 11 doubles and a slugging percentage of .544.

Thor maintained a 3.8 cumulative spring GPA.

Thor had 12 multi-hit games while he finished the season riding a nine-game hitting streak.

During his career with the Lobos, Thor hit 18 home runs while he recorded 109 RBI with a .350 average.

Thor earned ASC third-team honors this past spring.

>> WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:

Melody Martinez had a monster freshman campaign as she sported a 3.7 cumulative spring GPA.

She was named to the D3hoops.com All-Region 10 team by earning the recognition of Rookie of the Year.

Martinez was one of three players from the ASC to be named to the All-Region 10 team.

She was also named ASC Freshman of the Year while also being placed on the All-Freshman team. Martinez was also an All-ASC third-team selection as she helped the Lobos tally the best overall record and conference mark since joining the ASC in 1996.

Martinez scored 271 total points to rank third on the team and fifth in the conference as she averaged 13.6 points a game.

Her 31 made three-pointers are second-best on the squad and sixth-best in the conference.
 
Martinez also ranked fifth in the conference with 40 steals.
 
She scored a season-high 26 points during a 79-77 win over the University of St. Thomas on Nov. 27.
 
Martinez recorded 10 or more points in 15 games.

>> MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY:

Connor Archer was a two-sport standout running for the Lobo cross country squad and also a pitcher on the baseball diamond.

In the classroom, he sported a 3.9 spring cumulative GPA.

Archer made 13 appearances and logged in 19 innings pitched. He recorded one save and tallied 13 strikeouts.

On the cross-country course, Archer competed at the ASC Cross Country Championship as he posted a time of 40:51.7.

>> WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY:

Alpine native Kylie Garcia improved greatly from start to finish during her freshman campaign while maintaining a 3.8 spring cumulative GPA.

She was one five runners to compete at the ASC Cross Country Championship as the Lobos finished eighth overall.

Garcia ran a time of 36:17.3 during the postseason meet.

>> FOOTBALL:

Offensive lineman Jose Calderon sported a spring cumulative 3.5 GPA.

He helped lead the offense to becoming the fourth-best unit in the conference with 4,034 total yards. Sul Ross also had the second-best passing offense in the conference with 3,003 yards and 25 touchdowns.

>> MEN'S SOCCER:

Ryan Seidon maintained a spring cumulative GPA of 3.5.

He made 24 career starts and tallied 2,204 minutes on the pitch.

This past fall, Seidon recorded 954 minutes in 11 starts.

>> WOMEN'S SOCCER:

In 10 starts, Deserie Herrera logged in 984 minutes while scoring three goals and recording two assists.

Herrera took 18 shots on the mark, 30 overall.

She maintained a 3.5 spring cumulative GPA.

>> SOFTBALL:

Alpine native Camryn Hardin played in 24 games as she put together a .388 average with 26 hits, three doubles, 12 RBI and seven stolen bases.

Hardin finished with 10 multi-hit games while she tallied a nine-game hitting streak from April 14-29. During the span, she had 15 hits and eight RBI.

She drove in a season-best three runs during a 13-4 win over Concordia where she went 2 for 4 with a single and a double.

Hardin had a spring cumulative GPA of 4.0.

>> MEN'S TENNIS:

Kyle Villalon sported a spring cumulative GPA of 4.0.

Villalon was named an ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete back in 2021 and he was also recognized as an ASC West Division Quad-Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year in 2021.

>> WOMEN'S TENNIS:

A talented two-sport athlete, Marley Rokas starred on the basketball team and tennis squad.

Earning first-team ASC honors on the basketball court, Rokas led the Lobos with 362 total points. She averaged 13.9 points per game to rank third in the conference in scoring.
 
She also grabbed 195 rebounds and tallied 50 steals, which ranked second on the team.
 
Rokas was the second-best free throw shooter in the conference, making 96 of 113 shots (85 percent).
 
She averaged 30 minutes a game as she started all 26 games she appeared in.
 
Rokas finished with six double-doubles. She scored a season-high 24 points during a 96-60 win over the University of the Ozarks on Dec. 1.
 
In 23 games, Rokas scored 10 or more points. On five occasions she tallied 20 or more points. Rokas also led the Lobos by making 127 field goals.

On the tennis court, Rokas won the first two matches for the Lobos in back-to-back meetings against Texas Lutheran.

She had a spring cumulative GPA of 3.9.

>> VOLLEYBALL:

Arguably one of the most talented two-sport female athletes in the history of Sul Ross State athletics, Annika Canaba made a big splash in softball and volleyball.

While maintaining a spring cumulative GPA of 3.9, Canaba earned ASC second-team recognition on the softball diamond.

She led the team with 40 hits, nine stolen bases and a .396 average. She ranked as the seventh-best hitter in the conference.

Canaba also tallied two home runs, 19 RBI and a .535 slugging percentage.

Her 30 runs scored ranked 10th in the conference. Defensively, Canaba threw out 14 runners to lead the conference.

Canaba recorded 12 multi-hit games while also recording a nine-game hitting streak from April 7-28. She also tied for the team-lead in doubles (8).

On April 28, Canaba made history by playing all nine defensive positions during Game 1 of a doubleheader against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Canaba has been earned ASC All-Conference nods four straight times in volleyball and softball.

On the volleyball court, she tallied seven triple-doubles as she also tallied a team-high 289 kills along with 261 assists, 28 service aces, 166 digs and 35 total blocks.

Canaba was also named honorable mention All-Region 10 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
