PREVIEW: Lobo football tries to keep things rolling with game at ETBU

Sul Ross travels to Marshall this Saturday

There are two games left in the season for the Sul Ross State football team.

Sul Ross has a shot to finish the year 5-5 for the first time since 2017. The Lobos haven't had a winning record in conference play since 2016.

First, the Lobos have to get through the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on the road this Saturday.

>> HEAD TO HEAD: The Tigers are 17-4 against the Lobos since Oct. 14, 2000.

ETBU has won seven of the last eight meetings, including the last four in a row. The Lobos haven't beaten the Tigers since Nov. 12, 2016.

The win in 2016 for the Lobos was their first over the Tigers since Nov. 10, 2012.

Sul Ross also notched wins over ETBU in 2000 and 2006.

ETBU put together a pair of five-game winning streaks over the Lobos in the last 22 years.

>> THE TIGERS: ETBU began the season 2-2 before losing three games in a row, which included a low-scoring affair to Austin College, 13-10.

Last time out, the Tigers won a barnburner over Texas Lutheran, 38-35. Quarterback Cornelius Banks threw two touchdowns while completing 27 of 44 passes for 316 yards.

Banks has 1,262 passing yards on the year with nine touchdowns while he has completed 121 of 200 passes.

Kaleb O'Bryant leads the receiving corps with 461 yards on 32 catches. Melek Hamilton has been the top rusher with 357 yards on 107 carries.

Linebacker Demondre Williams has 69 total tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles and 5.5 tackles for loss to lead the defense.

ETBU is trying to post its second-straight 5-5 season.

>> STEPPING UP: Freshman quarterback Korbin Covarrubiaz showed a lot of grit coming out in an important game last weekend.

The Eldorado native threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns while completing 23 of 31 passes.

Covarrubiaz was featured as a top performer in the American Southwest Conference Players of the Week press release.

>> CHASING HISTORY: With two games remaining, linebacker Ronin Williams has 242 career tackles. He's just 23 tackles away from tying the school record for career tackles.
