Sul Ross State University men's and women's soccer teams, in conjunction with the Big Bend Youth Soccer Association (BBYSA), host a weekly skills clinic on Sundays for the local soccer community.
The clinics are led by head men's soccer coach
Jon Evan, head women's soccer coach
John Dominguez, and graduate assistant
Lorenzo Segura.
"This is an opportunity to give back to the local soccer community," said Evan. "We are trying to impress upon our student-athletes the importance of giving. Even when you think you have nothing to give, you can offer your knowledge, experience and time."
The clinics are for ages 5-18. They take place every Sunday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. through the fall season at the Lobo Soccer Field and are free to the public. It features men's and women's soccer players teaching the basic skills of dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting, attacking and defending. Other lessons include communication between teammates, learning how to stay organized within the game and the overall fundamentals of the sport.
"Community engagement and involvement for our student-athletes is critical," said Dominguez. "To see the smiles on the faces of our players and the young people at the clinic every Sunday when we finish makes it all worth it."
Players from both the men's and women's teams also serve as referees in the area youth league.
"They assist the league with short staffing issues," the coaches said. "It has been a great association with the BBYSA so far and you can already see the improvement in the quality of play for the youth players."
With this new partnership, the hope is to build a lasting relationship with the community and generate more interest and attendance for both Sul Ross soccer programs.
