Women's Soccer

PREVIEW: WSOC opens home slate Friday

After a cancelled season-opener at Houston-Victoria and a 2-0 setback at No. 5 Trinity, the Sul Ross women's soccer team will enjoy a double dose of home cooking this weekend.

The Lady Lobos are set to host Wayland Baptist of the NAIA and former American Southwest Conference member Schreiner University Friday and Sunday in the first half of a four-game home stand.

"The hurricane forced us to cancel our trip to Victoria," said coach Marquis Muse. "Then we took a bite at the No. 5 team in the nation so our rhythm was a little off kilter because we didn't have a precursor. But I thought we held our own."

Sul Ross held the opposition scoreless in the closing period in what Muse describes as two different performances.

"It was a tale of two halves," the coach said. "The stats from the first half were night and day compared to the second half. In the second half we tried to match them in every aspect, from a soccer standpoint and a physical standpoint."

Despite the Labor Day loss to the Tigers, Muse sees plenty of optimism heading into the upcoming bout with Wayland Baptist.

The Flying Queens sport an 0-2 mark coming to Alpine following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of visiting NCAA Division II Lubbock Christian on September 4 after a 3-1 loss against another DII opponent, U.T. Permian Basin on September 2.

Five seniors dot their current roster and Muse noted their athleticism.

"They have some talented players who are on scholarship but I think one thing that works in our favor is that we compete in one of the toughest conferences in this part of the nation," Muse said. "They have players that can give us problems and I'm hoping we can adjust to whatever schemes they throw at us."

"That's why we play these upper level schools because they serve as a sharpening tool before conference begins," he said.

Schreiner comes to Alpine for a Sunday afternoon match and looks to improve their record to 2-3 with a Friday bout at Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Mountaineers opened the season September 1 with a 3-0 shutout of visiting East Texas Baptist but dropped 1-0 and 3-0 decisions to LeTourneau and Concordia.

"Coach [Nick] Morrison will have his team prepared for Sunday," said Muse.

"What gives these two teams an upper hand is they have two or three games already under their belt so their game prep will be refined and we're going to have to play a little catch up," he said.

In Sully's first year of competition, Schreiner defeated the Lady Lobos, 3-0 then claimed a 2-1 victory in 2016.

"So we're closing the gap against this team but we need to limit mistakes and not give them opportunities to capitalize," Muse said.

Friday's contest kicks off at 4:00 p.m. while Sunday's game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
