Video: Football hikes Hancock Hill with "new" Desk

In celebration of Sul Ross State University's 100th birthday and NCAA Division III Week, members of the Lobo football team joined other members of the university community in retiring and replacing a piece of Sul Ross tradition dating back more than 35 years.

The Desk has attracted students, faculty, staff and visitors to Hancock Hill as a place for contemplation and reflection. In 1981, Sul Ross Industrial Tech Education student Jim Kitchen and classmates Bill Wagner and Travis Miller decided they needed a quiet spot away from the dorm to study.

Together they carried a desk up Hancock Hill right above Mountainside dormitory. Soon Kitchen and his friends were spending hours up on the hill studying and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

One day, Kitchen left a notebook in one of the desk drawers and when he checked it later, someone had written in it.

He replied and soon the tradition of a notebook associated with The Desk was born. Ten years later, the first completed notebooks were brought to the Archives of the Big Bend in the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library.

Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with a Division III institution to observe and celebrate the impact athletics and student-athletes have on campus and in the surrounding community.

During the week, every Division III school and conference office is encouraged to conduct an outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement. Division III Week is a strategic initiative that achieves its desired impact from a unity of effort. It harnesses everyone working toward the same goal at the same time to build a greater awareness and understanding of Division III athletics.
