Women set to close out home season this week

The Sul Ross women's basketball team (4-18, 1-10) will close out the home season this week as Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia come calling to the Gallego Center this Thursday and Saturday.

This week's games will also mark the final home games for Sul Ross senior Amanda Garza (San Benito/SBHS).

RECAP

Ashley Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) led with 17 points as the Sul Ross Lady Lobos dropped an 86-71 decision to McMurry Saturday in Abilene.

Sul Ross held the lead at halftime but could not sustain the momentum through the third period.

Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) dished out 14 points in the effort while Killeen Shoemakers grads Ashley Ousley and Jonette Jackson each scored 11.

The Lady Lobos hit nearly half of their field goals at 25 of 51 or 49 percent including a six of 18 showing beyond the arc.

In a wild fourth quarter Hardin-Simmons was able to put the brakes on a Sul Ross rally and defeat the Lady Lobos, 72-71 Thursday night.

Jackson led the scoring effort with 18 points and posted a team high eight rebounds.

Minjarez and Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/California) scored 15 and 12 points respectively in the effort.

Sul Ross shot a better than average 48 percent from the field against HSU who welcomed the return of leading scorer Kourtney Holyfield to the lineup.

Holyfield was held to just seven points on the night and entered the game against SRSU averaging 16.4 points per game including an 11.6 points per game average against conference competition.

Miles sported 15 points as the Sul Ross fell to host Mary Hardin-Baylor, 75-57.

Jackson posted 12 points with a team high seven rebounds in the effort.

The Lady Lobos suffered another slow day's shooting from the floor finishing at 17 of 51 or 33 percent.

Sul Ross connected on four of 14 from beyond the arc at 29 percent as Minjarez nailed down a pair of three pointers.

Sul Ross dropped a 72-52 decision to host Concordia as the Tornadoes picked up their first ASC victory of the season.

Miles led the Pack with 16 points while Jackson collected 10 rebounds in the effort.

Sul Ross shot a cold 31 percent from the floor against Concordia but hit four of 10 from outside the arc at 40 percent.

UMHB TEAM NOTES
  • At 11-10 and 6-5 the Crusaders sit in second place in the ASC West Division.
  • Jonelle Smith, who leads the team in scoring is coming off an 18-point performance in last Saturday's 77-64 victory at Concordia putting UMHB on a three-game winning streak.
  • Smith currently averages 13.1 points per game and 14.8 ppg against ASC opponents.
  • As a team the Crusaders are ranked second in the conference in scoring defense at 62.7 points per contest.
  • The Cru sits in fourth place in assists with 292 on the season and averages 13.9 assists per game.
  • Smith ranks 12 in the top 30 conference scorers.
  • Kendra Wynn ranks 15 out of the top 20 rebounders in the league averaging seven boards per contest.
  • Meghan Turner ranks fifth out of the top 15 assist producers at 3.8 assists per contest.

  • The Tornadoes sport a 10-10 season record with a 208 mark in conference play. Concordia sits in fourth place in the ASC West.
  • As a team CTX ranks No. 1 in scoring defense averaging 61.8 points per game.
  • The Tornadoes are third in the league in steals with 210 total steals on the season (10.5 pg).
  • Jaela Dejean ranks 12 out of the top 30 scorers in the ASC averaging 13.3 points per contest.
  • Isis Johnson is eighth out of the top 20 rebounders averaging 8.1 boards per game.
  • Johnson also sports the third best field goal percentage in the league at .464.
  • Dejean ranks ninth out of the top 15 in steals at 1.9 per game.

  • The Lady Lobos are third in the ASC in field goal percentage at .391.
  • Sul Ross leads the league in rebounding defense at 38.7 per game.
  • Miles is ranked 15 out of the top 30 scorers in the ASC averaging 12.7 points per game.
  • Miles (6.6 rpg.) and Jackson (6.2 rpg.)are ranked 16 and 20 respectively in rebounding.
  • Ashely Ousley ranks fourth out of the top 15 in assists with 84 on the season (3.8 pg).
  • Miles and Ousley rank 11 and 15 in free throw percentage at .691 and .663 respectively.
  • Miles and Ousley are ranked third and 12 in steals at 2.5 and 1.8 steals per contest.
