QUOTES FROM COACH JOHN PEARCE
On Saturday's win: It was great for our program.
The atmosphere was really electric for our players and fans. We needed that win after coming up short three previous times. We knew Hal Mumme was going to throw the ball a lot. That's their mojo. They had a lot of dropped passes which helped us but we had some dropped passes that would have led to interceptions so that kind of evened things out.
On younger players getting experience: We played a lot of football players Saturday especially on the defensive side because we knew what we were going to face. So we moved Britton (Wagner) to the front and
Esteban Vigil to the nose guard position. We were just rotating a lot of guys out there.
Thoughts on tackle technique: We did a lot better with our tackling in terms of wrapping up and finishing up plays. Like I said last week, that was something that has really crippled us for most of the season. Our foot work looked much better.
On the quarterback rotation: There were some issues with cramping throughout the game. James went out in the fourth quarter with some cramp issues but he worked through it. He's tough and his athleticism has really contributed a lot to our running game. Jeremy really stepped up for us. We like to use him like Tim Tebow at Florida. He's a running quarterback who utilizes his legs and hits the holes hard and was able to come up with three scores for us. Paul (Rodriguez) was injured coming into camp but was able to take some snaps for us. He's still a little behind just learning the system so he's in catch up mode right now.
On James Davis and his season best passing performance: James is getting more comfortable each week. He has some really good receivers to work with and those guys really did a better job Saturday of running their routes and giving him some open looks. But he also has an offensive line that's getting better and better every week. So things just meshed really well last Saturday for our offense in terms of protection up front, receivers running good routes and James hitting his targets.
Thoughts on Adrion Smith: He was working through training camp and just moving up the depth chart. We had him splitting time between the first and second groups. He suffered a shoulder injury before the U.T.P.B. game so he had to sit out about three or four weeks so we had to go with Andre (Wilson) who had a phenomenal game for us at Wayland. But he gets hurt and is having to miss a couple of weeks so it's just good to have multiple backs in that position.
Thoughts and keys to Louisiana College: We're breaking up their film from their game against Hardin-Simmons who they played very tough. They had some issues with their special teams that worked against them. Hardin-Simmons was able to run back a kick return against them and then they had a bad snap over the punter. So if you take those factors out it might have been a different ball game. They run multiple sets and will try to run the ball. They have a really good 1-2 punch between their quarterback and running back. Melancon is a smart quarterback and knows how to spread the offense out. It will be very similar to Hardin-Simmons.
