Lobos And Greyhounds Slug It Out

LAREDO, Texas – Junior McKenzie Hart and freshman Antyiahna Lang had double-digit in kills as the Sul Ross State University volleyball team (0-10) lost 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 32-30, 15-10) to Eastern New Mexico (3-6) in the LSC Challenge Weekend, Friday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

In the first set, Eastern New Mexico and Sul Ross State traded points at the start.  With the Lobos up 5-4, junior Libby Foster found the back corner.  That started a 12-6 run to seal the set.

In the second set, the Greyhounds and SRSU traded points early until 8-7.  Lang knocked the ball off the block.  That started a run of five straight points.

Down 13-7, ENMU reeled off an 8-4 burst.  That closed the gap to 17-15.  Up 19-16, Sul Ross State forced two errors to take control.

In the third set, Eastern Mexico and the Lobos battled on even terms.  Up 15-14, the Greyhounds outscored SRSU 4-1 to lead 19-15.

Sul Ross State forced an error and got a block from Hart and junior Anayah Sinclair to cut it to 19-17.  ENMU scored four straight to effectively end the set.

In the fourth set, the Lobos looked to be in control, up 24-19.  Eastern New Mexico scored six straight points to go up 25-24.

SRSU and the Greyhounds just traded points at a fast and furious pace.  Sinclair hammered the ball home to put Sul Ross State in the lead, 30-29.  ENMU stunned the Lobos with three straight to force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, Eastern New Mexico came out fast getting up 5-1.  SRSU forced an error to end a 7-4 run to make it 9-8.  The Greyhounds got five straight to effectively take the match.

For Sul Ross State, Lang had 15 kills and hit .400, Hart had 11 kills, nine total blocks and hit .455 and Foster had nine kills while hitting .391. 

Hart had eight block assist, tied for fifth best in NCAA program history.  Sinclair was right behind Hart with seven block assists.  Sophomore Violetta Flores had three aces and sophomore Hannah Garcia had 10 digs.

As a team, the Lobos hit .256 and had two solo blocks with 24 assists for 14 team blocks.  The assist blocks are tied for fifth in NCAA program history.

For Eastern New Mexico, Sophia Valdez had 26 kills.

Sul Ross State opens the home season, Thursday, Sept. 17 against Lubbock Christian.  The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
