Lobos Close Out Road Tournament

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Sul Ross State University volleyball team (0-4) closed out the Virginia Harris/Jeanie Miller Invitational, Saturday at Paul Wright Gymnasium.

Western Colorado (4-0) L, 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-18)
In the first set, Western Colorado jumped out to a 9-4 lead and never looked back.

In the second set, Sul Ross State came out of the gates quickly.   A block assist from junior Brianna Galvan and senior Katrin Hardardottir put the Lobos up 7-3.

The Mountaineers came back to tie it at 8-8.  From there, WOU and SRSU battled on even terms.

Down 18-16, Galvan fired off back-to-back kills to tie it up at 18-18.  Western Colorado scored the next seven points to take the set,

In the third set, the Mountaineers got out to a 7-3 lead. Sul Ross State fought back and Hardardottir smashed the ball down the middle to the floor to end a 4-1 burst.

That closed the gap to 8-7.  WOU scored the next six points to effectively end the set.

For Sul Ross State, senior BreAnna Quarles collected 11 digs.

For Western Colorado, Sierra Long had 16 kills and hit .351.

New Mexico Highlands (1-3) – L, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21,)
In the first set, New Mexico Highlands and Sul Ross State traded points early.  Galvan and freshman Antyiahna Lang stuffed the Cowgirl hitter.

That cut the gap to 9-7.  NMH went on a 6-2 run to take control.

In the second set, New Mexico Highlands and the Lobos once again slugged it out.  Galvan and Lang combined on another block.

That made it 8-7, Cowgirls.  NMH reeled off an 8-3 run to effectively end the set.

In the third set, New Mexico Highlands and SRSU played a strategic set early.  Up 14-13, The Cowgirls went on a 5-1 run to lead 19-14.

Sul Ross State refused to go down without a fight.  The Lobos forced an error to closed out a 6-3 run to make it 22-20.  NMH held off SRSU for the win.

For Sul Ross State, Lang had nine kills while senior Mia Espinoza had 12 digs.

For New Mexico Highlands, Aziza Morris had 10 kills.

Sul Ross State heads back to Colorado, this time in Grand Junction, Friday, Sept. 4 to take on Colorado Mesa and Adams State.  The matches are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. MT, respectively.
