Lobos And Rattlers Slug It Out

ALPINE, Texas – Junior Samantha Bustos tied a school record as the Sul Ross State University softball team (5-29 Lone Star Conference, 7-34) lost 6-1 and 11-9 to St. Mary's (Texas) (19-15 LSC, 27-20), Friday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.

Game-1
St. Mary's took a 3-0 lead after three innings and kept Sul Ross State in check.  In the fourth inning, Bustos singled with one out to break up the no-hitter. 

For Sul Ross State, Bustos had two hits.  Freshman Addison Castilleja (3-8) gave up 12 hits, six runs, walked three and struck out six in seven innings.

For St. Mary's, Ariella Saenz (12-7) gave up three hits, one run, walked one and struck out one in six innings.

Game-2
In the night cap, the Rattlers scored seven runs in the second inning and looked to be in complete control.  In the bottom of the third with bases loaded and no outs, sophomore Jenna Leanos ripped a triple to clear the bases.

Bustos singled to score Leanos to make it 7-4.  SMU took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth.  With sophomore Carissa Fernandez on first, Bustos hit a bomb over the left field wall.

The ball landed about 60 feet past the wall and cut the gap to 8-6.  In the sixth inning, the Lobos used two hits and two walks to score three runs to take the lead, 9-8.

St. Mary's scored three runs to take the lead back in the seventh.  In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Baylie Savage walked and junior Valeria Aguilar singled.

That put two on with one out.  The Rattlers got a fielder's choice and a strikeout to take the win.

For Sul Ross State, Bustos had three hits and drove in five runs, Leanos scored twice and drove in four runs, sophomore Andrea Apodaca had two hits and Fernandez scored three runs.  Castilleja (3-9) gave up one hit, three runs and walked four in two innings.

Bustos tied the school record becoming the ninth player in program history to drive in five runs in a single game.

For St. Mary's, Emery Aguilar (10-3) gave up two hits, walked one and struck out two in 1.7 innings.

Sul Ross State closes out the home season, Sunday, Apr. 26, taking on St. Edwards.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
