Lobos See Mustangs Ride Away

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (2-13 Lone Star Conference, 4-16) lost 70-53 to Western New Mexico (RV) (12-4 LSC, 18-5), Thursday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

Sul Ross State came out like a house on fire.  Senior Christian Nevarez knocked down a 3-pointer from deep in the heart of Texas.

That put the Lobos up 11-1 after just four minutes.  Western New Mexico came back with a 19-8 burst.  That saw the Mustangs go up 20-19 at the 7:41 mark.

Up four 25-21 with 5:05 to go, Western New Mexico finished the half with a 17-5 run.  That put the Mustangs up 42-26 at the break.

WNMU pushed the lead to 17, 48-31 at the 16:27 mark.  SRSU began to chip away.  Junior Tim Mikhailov dropped one in from outer space.

That ended a 19-9 burst to make it 57-50 with 8:01 to go.  That was as close as Sul Ross State could get.

The Lobos held the Mustangs to 26.1% on triples, the sixth straight game that an opponent shot under .300.

For Sul Ross State, junior Antwonne Holmes had 13 points and four steals, freshman Julien Barclay scored 12 points and Mikhailov had 11 points with three triples.

For Western New Mexico, Isaiah Broady had 20 points and nine rebounds.

Sul Ross State remains home, Friday, Feb. 13, playing Western New Mexico in a non-conference game.  The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
