Lobos Fall Short Of Mustangs

ALPINE, Texas – Junior Antwonne Holmes had a double-double as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (4-17) lost 68-57 to Western New Mexico (RV) (19-5), Friday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

In the first half, Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico played on even terms for the first seven minutes.  The Mustangs scored 13 straight points and led by 16 at halftime.

WNMU pushed it to 45-23 at the 18:21 mark of the second half.  The Lobos began their version of fast and furious.

Holmes hit a pair of charity tosses to end a 27-6 burst.  That closed the gap to 51-50 with 7:57 left.  Western New Mexico scored seven in a row to take control.

The Lobos were dominant on the defensive boards.  SRSU pulled down 27 defensive rebounds to just five offensive for the Mustangs.

For Sul Ross State, Holmes had 25 points, 10 rebounds (all defensive) and shot 11-of-12 from the line.

For Western New Mexico, Isaiah Broady had 17 points.

Sul Ross State stays home, Thursday, Feb. 19, taking on St. Mary's (Texas).  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
