Lobos Slug It Out With Buffs

ALPINE, Texas – A furious rally fell short as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (0-5 Lone Star Conference, 2-8) lost 86-79 to #14 West Texas A&M (4-1 LSC, 12-3), Sunday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

For the first nine minutes, Sul Ross State and West Texas A&M slugged it out.  At 12-12, the Buffs went on a 10-2 run to lead 22-14 at the 8:33 mark.

The Lobos dug in and went on a run of their own.  Senior Manny Flores dropped one in from outer space.

That ended a 16-7 burst to put SRSU up 30-29 with 3:03 to go.  Junior Antwonne Holmes cashed in his long distance plan just in front of the buzzer to put Sul Ross State up 38-36 at the half.

WTAM and the Lobos traded buckets for the first five minutes until it was 47-47.  West Texas A&M went on a 33-14 run to seemingly have the game in hand 80-61 at the 5:26 mark.

SRSU refused to quit and went on a fast and furious rally.  Holmes knocked one down from El Paso to close the gap to 84-79 with 22 seconds left.  The Buffs hit two late free throws to clinch the game.

The Lobos were once again hot on 3-pointers, shooting 41.7%, the fourth time in the last five games that they have shot 40% or better.  The Lobos also pulled down 23 defensive boards to just 10 offensive for WTAM.

For Sul Ross State, Holmes had a very strong performance scoring 32 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 on triples.  He added four assists and two steals.  Junior Tim Mikhailov scored 15 points and senior Chianti Clay had 14 points.

For West Texas A&M, Kemper Jones and Fontaine Williams had 23 points each..

Sul Ross State takes to the road, Thursday, Jan.8 taking on Dallas Baptist.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
