Lobos Defeat Javelinas at Pete P. Gallego Center

Alpine, Texas — Sul Ross State University Women's Basketball (3–15, LSC 2–10) earned a hard-fought Lone Star Conference victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Texas A&M University–Kingsville (4–14, LSC 4–8) 62–58 at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

Sul Ross scored 12 points in the opening quarter, added another 12 in the second, built momentum with 16 points in the third, and closed strong with 22 points in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback win. Sophiya Bustillos led the Lobos with 15 points, knocking down five three-pointers, including a clutch triple in the final minute to give Sul Ross the lead for good. Leslie Mojica finished with 13 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line, while Victoria Aguayo anchored the effort with nine points, 10 rebounds, and six steals as the Lobos forced 21 turnovers and shot 79.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Sul Ross head coach E.J. Smith praised his team's effort and resilience following the win, saying, "Our players played hard and together the entire ball game. Even though we were behind, we didn't give up. What a defense — we were moving to stop the drive and closed out consistently. Our players stayed focused and played as a team the entire game, and I'm super proud of my kids. I saw real mental toughness tonight." Smith also highlighted the late-game execution, adding, "Leslie made a great pass to Sophiya, and she knocked down the shot to secure the win. As usual, Victoria was productive all across the board with 10 rebounds, six steals, and nine points. Leslie continues to be a strong contributor with 13 points, four assists, and four steals, and she went 9-for-9 at the free-throw line. Sophiya was also a big factor, scoring 15 points and hitting five threes. What a win for our kids — we really needed this, and it was a total team effort."

Sul Ross returns to Lone Star Conference action on Thursday, February 5, traveling to Odessa, Texas, to take on UT Permian Basin at the Falcon Dome. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:15 PM.
