Lobos Pick Up A Pair On The Road

SILVER CITY, N.M. – All the pistons were popping as the Sul Ross State University volleyball team (2-0) beat Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico on Day 1 of the Mustang Invitational, Friday at Drag's Court.  This is the first time the Lobos have started 2-0 since 2019.

Western New Mexico (0-1) – W, 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 16-25, 15-11)
The first set saw Western New Mexico get off to a 12-9 lead.  Junior Mia Espinoza rattled off a kill to start Sul Ross State on the comeback trail. The Lobos forced an error to close off a run of eight straight points.

That put SRSU up 17-12.  The Mustangs fought their way back in, closing to 23-22.  Sul Ross State got a kill from freshman Danielle Senak and an ace from junior Eliana Mata to close it out.

In the second set, WNMU and the Lobos slugged it out the whole way.  Tied at 21-21, SRSU forced an error to start a 4-1 run to take the second set.

In the third set, Western New Mexico came out firing away, getting to a 12-4 lead to effectively end the set.

In the fourth set, SRSU and the Mustangs went back-and-forth until 8-8.  Western New Mexico reeled off an 8-1 burst to take control.

In the fifth set, it was 4-3 in the early going.  Senior Cassandra Espinoza notched two monster kills that turned the tide for the Lobos.

For Sul Ross State, freshman Samantha Senak had 14 kills and hit .440 while C. Espinoza had 10 kills and 16 digs.  Junior BreAnna Quarles added 12 digs.

For Western New Mexico, Kaitlyn Salgado had 18 kills and Mikelle McAfee collected 23 digs.

Eastern New Mexico (0-2) W, 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 18-25, 25-15)
In the first set, Eastern New Mexico and Sul Ross State battled on even terms until 6-6. The Lobos forced an error which started a run of six straight points to effectively end the set.

In the second set, the Greyhounds and Lobos played a strategic chess match, with neither team really going on any long runs.

Down 23-22, C. Espinoza blasted the ball off the blocker.  SRSU then forced two hitting errors to go up 2-0.

In the third set, it was another tug of war battle.  Senior Sarah Chavez found the back corner to tie it up at 13-13.  ENMU scored five straight points and never looked back.

In the fourth set, Eastern New Mexico and Sul Ross State slugged it our until 10-10.  D. Senak blasted the ball right down the middle.  That started a 10-2 burst to seal the match.

For Sul Ross State, C. Espinoza had nine kills, three aces, 10 digs and hit .286.  Sophomore Novah Carrasco and Chavez had eight kills each and both hit .500 or better.  Defensively, Quarles had 21 digs.

For Eastern New Mexico, Sophia Valdez had 13 kills.

Sul Ross State closes out the Mustang Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 5 taking on New Mexico Highlands and Fort Lewis.  The games are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Mountain Time, respectively.
