Lobos Close Out Mustang Invitational

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Sul Ross State University volleyball team (2-2) lost to New Mexico Highlands and Fort Lewis on Day 2 of the Mustang Invitational, Saturday at Drag's Court.

New Mexico Highlands (3-1) – L, 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-16)
The first set saw New Mexico Highlands get out to a 9-6 lead.  Sophomore Libby Foster fired the ball down the line to tie it up at 9-9.  At 16-16, the Cowgirls went on a 5-1 run to take control. 

In the second set, NMH looked to put it away early going up 9-2.  Sul Ross State refused to quit.  The Lobos forced an error to finish a 9-4 run to make it 13-11. New Mexico Highlands shut down SRSU to take the set.

In the third set, at 9-7, the Cowgirls went on a 5-1 run to effectively end the match.

For Sul Ross State, senior Cassandra Espinoza and junior BreAnna Quarles had 13 digs each.

For New Mexico Highlands, Aziza Morris had 10 kills.

Fort Lewis (3-1), L, 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-18)
In the first set, Fort Lewis took an early 10-8 lead.  The Skyhawks reeled off a 9-1 burst to effectively end the set.

In the second set, at 8-8, Sul Ross State made their bid to put it away.  Junior Eliana Mata recorded an ace to end a five point run, making it 13-8, Lobos.

FLC then stunned SRSU, scoring eight straight points.  Down 18-14, Sul Ross State started to close the gap.

Sophomore Novah Carrasco stuffed the hitter to make it 20-19, Fort Lewis.  The Skyhawks got the next two points to take control.

In the third set, FLC and the Lobos went back-and-forth. Down 14-12, Fort Lewis scored seven straight points to effectively end the match.

For Sul Ross State, Quarles had 11 digs.

For Fort Lewis, Emery Pomroy had 24 digs.

Sul Ross State returns to Silver City, New Mexico, Thursday, Sept.18 taking on Western New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m., Mountain Time.
