Lobos Shut Down Chaps

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Benjamin Aviles set a school record as the Sul Ross State University men's soccer team (3-2-2) beat Lubbock Christian (1-5-1) 1-0, Thursday night at LCU Soccer & Track Complex.  The Lobos extended their undefeated streak to a program best five games.

Sul Ross State came out aggressive with three strong scoring chances in the first 24 minutes of the game.  After 60 minutes, the game remained scoreless.

At the 60:35 mark, the Chaps were called for a foul in the box.  Junior Miguel Achique converted the penalty kick to put the Lobos up 1-0.  SRSU tightened up the defense allowing only two shots on goal the rest of the way.

Sul Ross State Head Coach Bailey Guffin
"Proud of the effort tonight. We didn't start great, and we had to suffer for long periods of the game. Really had to grind out a result.  Congrats to Miguel on his first goal for us and big congrats to our back line earning another clean sheet. Seven games in a row on the road is never easy, looking forward to some rest before conference."

Sul Ross State had seven shots with five on goal, two corner kicks and were called for 14 fouls.  Aviles finished the game with seven saves.  He picked up his sixth career victory, breaking the school record of five he held with Frank Rodriguez (2018-19) and Alexis Tellez (2019-22).

Lubbock Christian had 23 shots with seven on goal, 12 corner kicks and were called for 15 fouls.

Sul Ross State stays on the road, Saturday, Oct. 4, taking on St. Mary's (Texas).  The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
