Lobos Hold Down Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Sul Ross State University men's soccer team (1-0 Lone Star Conference, 4-2-2) beat St. Mary's (Texas) (Receiving Votes – United Soccer Coaches Poll) (0-1-1 LSC, 1-2-6) 1-0, Saturday evening at Sigma Beta Chi Field.  This is the first win in program history over a team that has been ranked or receiving votes.

Sul Ross State and St. Mary's played strong defensively as there were only three shots on goal combined in the first half.  With 3:38 left in the half, the Rattlers were called for a foul in the box.  Senior Lewis Coates converted the penalty kick for the 1-0 lead.

The second half was more of the same with just three combined shots on goal.  Sophomore Benjamin Aviles made several great saves to keep the Lobos on top.

Sul Ross State had three shots with two on goal, two corner kicks and were called for 13 fouls.  Aviles posted his third straight shutout to extend his goalless streak to 309:59.

St. Mary's had 20 shots with four on goal, two corner kicks and were called for nine fouls.

Sul Ross State is finally home, Wednesday, Oct. 8, taking on St. Edwards.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
