Lobos Slug It Out With Falcons

ALPINE, Texas – Senior Estevan Ortiz had two home runs as The Sul Ross State University baseball team (3-36 Lone Star Conference, 4-36) lost 23-8 and 15-14 to The University of Texas Permian Basin (12-23 LSC, 12-24), Sunday afternoon at Kokernot Field.

Game 1
UT Permian Basin scored 12 runs over the first three innings to take control.

For Sul Ross State, Ortiz had two hits (double, home run) and scored twice, junior Chris Ulloa had a home run and freshman Jalen Garibay scored three runs.  Senior Alvaro Hernandez (0-3) gave up 11 hits, 16 runs with 10 earned, walked three and struck out one in three innings.

For UT Permian Basin, Nolan LaChappa (3-3) gave up four hits, five runs, walked three and struck out six in five innings.

Game 2
The game resembled a rollercoaster.  The Falcons lead 9-0 after two innings.  SRSU struck back with four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.  That cut the gap to 9-8.

UTPB scored twice in the sixth.  In the bottom half, freshman Luke Garrett doubled to score junior Joseph Binder.

In the seventh inning, senior Ricardo Franco was hit by a pitch and replaced on the bases by freshman Alfonso Lopez.  Freshman Adan Velasquez was hit by a pitch.

Fifth year player Primo Vasquez crushed a double to center field to score both runners and send the game into extra innings.  UT Permian Basin scored four runs in the top of the eighth.

The Lobos refused to quit.  Following an out, Garibay hit a solo shot over the left field fence.  With two outs, Velasquez drew a walk and Ortiz blasted the ball over the wall in right field.

That made it 15-14.  The Falcons got a ground ball to get the win.

For Sul Ross State, Binder had three hits and scored three runs while Garrett had three hits (double and home run) and drove in three runs.  Ortiz homered for his second straight game.  Junior Noah Tofan (1-2) gave up four hits, four runs, walked three and struck out one in two innings.

For UT Permian Basin, Bryan Adams (1-1) gave up three hits, five runs, walked two and struck out three in two innings.

Sul Ross State finishes the series with UT Permian Basin, Monday, Apr. 7.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
