Lobos Slug It Out With Hilltoppers

ALPINE, Texas – Freshman Alfonso Lopez and junior Aaron Morales had four hits each as the Sul Ross State University baseball team (2-21 Lone Star Conference, 2-21) lost 10-9 and 15-4 to #17 St. Edward's (17-6 LSC, 18-6), Saturday at Kokernot Field.

Game 1
The Hilltoppers struck first scoring a run in the first inning.  In the bottom of the first, Lopez led off with a solo home run to make it 1-1.

SEU put up five runs in the second to go up 6-1.  In the bottom half of the inning, junior Xavier Garcia singled to push junior Chris Ulloa and Morales across the plate.

In the third inning, the Lobos used five hits and two errors to put six runs on the board and lead 9-6.  St. Edward's scored four in the fifth inning to take the lead back.

In each of the last three innings, SRSU had at least one runner on.  The Hilltoppers managed to stop them each time.

For Sul Ross State, Lopez and Morales had two hits each.  Senior Ryan Sandoval (1-5) gave up eight hits, 10 runs with eight earned, walked five and struck out one in 4.3 innings.

For St. Edward's, George Hettrick (3-2) gave up nine hits, nine runs with seven earned, walked one and struck out six in six innings.

Game 2
In the first inning with one out, fifth year player Primo Vasquez had a solo shot over the left centerfield wall.  Morales doubled to centerfield and scored on a crushing double from sophomore Rene Ramos.

Ramos moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.  The put Sul Ross State up 3-0.  St. Edward's scored two runs in the second inning.

In the third inning, Morales smacked a double to left field and scored on a single by junior Joseph Binder.  That made it 4-2, Lobos.

The Hilltoppers scored twice in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.  SEU sealed the game with five runs in the sixth inning.

For Sul Ross State, Lopez and Morales had two hits apiece.  Lopez pushed his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games.  Senior Rene Solis Jr. (0-1) gave up three hits, four runs and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.

For St. Edward's, Jakub Rayfield (2-3) gave up six hits, four runs, walked three and struck out five in 5.3 innings.

Sul Ross State closes out the series against #17 St. Edward's, Sunday, Mar. 9.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
