Sul Ross State Battles The Buffs

CANYON, Texas – The Sul Ross State University baseball team (2-24 Lone Star Conference, 2-24) lost 17-1 and 20-6 to West Texas A&M (RV) (20-6 LSC, 21-6), Saturday afternoon at Wilder Park.

Game 1
Sul Ross State started quick.  With two outs in the first inning, junior Aaron Morales hit a solo shot over the right field fence.  The Buffs scored three runs in the second and third innings.

In each of those same innings, the Lobos had a runner on but were unable to bring them home.  WTAM scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to effectively end the game.

For Sul Ross State, freshman Alfonso Lopez extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games.  Junior Christian Loveless (0-4) gave up 10 hits, 12 runs, walked four and struck out one in 3.7 innings. 

For West Texas A&M, Matt Millner (3-1) gave up three hits, one run, walked two and struck out nine in five innings.

Game 2
SRSU used two hits, an error and a hit by a pitch to score twice in the first inning.  West Texas A&M responded with four runs in the bottom half.

In the second inning, junior Corbin Dube drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Following a fly out to move to third, another wild pitch scored Dube to make it 4-3. 

The Buffs scored eight runs over the next three innings to seal the game.

For Sul Ross State, senior Ryan Sandoval (1-6) gave up 16 hits, 12 runs with 10 earned, walked one and struck out one in 3.3 innings. 

For West Texas A&M, Nathan Scott (3-1) gave up two hits, three runs with one earned, walked two and struck out seven in five innings.

Sul Ross State closes the series with West Texas A&M, Sunday, Mar. 16.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon.
