Sul Ross State And Dust Devils Slug It Out

ALPINE, Texas – Freshman Alfonso Lopez smacked two home runs as the Sul Ross State University baseball team (2-13 Lone Star Conference, 2-13) lost 7-5 and 8-5 to Texas A&M International (6-9 LSC, 6-10), Saturday afternoon at Kokernot Field.

Game 1
The Dustdevils had one big inning in the fourth inning.  That allowed them to take a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Aaron Morales singled and junior Joseph Binder was hit by a pitch.  Fifth year player Primo Vasquez crushed a double to centerfield to score Morales and Binder.

Following two outs, junior Xavier Garcia singled to score Vasquez.  Lopez cam in to pinch hit and blasted the ball over the left field wall.  That made it 7-5.  TAMIU got the next batter out to end the game.

For Sul Ross State, Morales and Vasquez had two hits each.  Senior Ryan Sandoval (1-3) gave up eight hits, six runs with four earned, walked three and struck out one in six innings.

Game 2
Texas A&M International scored two runs in the first inning and held Sul Ross State off until the fourth inning.

In that inning, with one out, junior Brock Rogers was hit by a pitch.  Lopez once again cleared the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

The Dustdevils scored three runs in the top of the sixth.  In the bottom half, Rogers walked and stole second while Lopez was walked.

A ground ball moved them each one base.  Junior Corbin Montayne singled to score Rogers making it 5-3.

TAMIU scored three in the seventh and looked to be in control.  The Lobos refused to quit, scoring twice and having the bases loaded with one out.  The Dustdevils got the next two batters out to escape.

For Sul Ross State, Binder had three hits and Lopez had two hits and drove in four runs.  Junior Christian Loveless (0-1) gave up eight hits, four runs, walked one and struck out one in 5.3 innings.
