Sul Ross State Drops Heartbreaker To Eagles

EDMOND, Oklahoma – Four players scored in double-figures as the Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-19 Lone Star Conference, 2-21) lost 78-71 to Oklahoma Christian (6-14 LSC, 9-15), Thursday evening at the Eagles' Nest.

Sul Ross State and Oklahoma Christian battled back-and-forth the entire game.  Tied at 24-24 at the 3:58 mark of the second period, the Lobos went on an 10-2 run to lead 34-26 after two periods.

SRSU led the entire third period and at one point had a 13-point lead.  Senior Cheyanne Bonilla hit a jumper that put Sul Ross State up 59-52 at the 8:27 mark of the final period.

The Eagles scored eight straight points to lead 60-59 with 5:59 to go.  The Lobos refused to quit.  Junior Victoria Aguayo hit two free throws with 19 seconds left.

That pulled SRSU to four, 75-71.  OCU hit three free throws down the stretch to hold on.

The Lobos held the Eagles to 25% from behind the arc, the ninth time in the last 12 games that an opponent shot 32% or less.  SRSU also used their defense to score 31 points off 25 OCU turnovers.

For Sul Ross State, Bonilla had 16 points and three steals, Aguayo had 13 points and six steals, sophomore Melody Martinez had 13 points with three treys and graduate student Caitlyn Corley had 12 points, two steals and two triples. 

For Oklahoma Christian, Nakia Cullom scored 26 points with 15 rebounds.

Sul Ross State keeps to the road, Saturday, Feb. 22 taking on Cameron.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
