Sul Ross State Falls To Lady Buffs

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-17 Lone Star Conference, 2-19) lost 81-47 to West Texas A&M (10-8 LSC, 16-9), Thursday evening at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

In the first period, Sul Ross State and West Texas A&M slugged it out.  There were six lead changes and two ties.  Junior Jema Padilla hit a lay-up that put the Lobos up 14-13 as the period ended.

The Lady Buffs got out to a 32-20 lead at the 4:20 mark of the second period.  Junior Ariana Escalante hit a tough 3-point play (bucket and free throw).  Graduate student Caitlyn Corley knocked one down from the ozone layer.

That made it 32-26, WTAM with 2:17 to go.  West Texas A&M finished the period on a 7-2 run to effectively seal the game.

The Lobos held the Lady Chaps to 30% on treys, the eighth time in the last 10 games an opponent has shot under 32%.

For Sul Ross State, sophomore Melody Martinez scored 13 points with three triples while junior Victoria Aguayo had eight points and eight rebounds. 

For West Texas A&M, Kyla Kane scored 18 points.

Sul Ross State closes the home season, Saturday, Feb. 15, playing Eastern New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
