Lobos Battle Tough Against Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was a valiant effort as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (0-2 Lone Star Conference, 2-5) lost 84-66 to #13 St. Mary's (Texas) (2-0 LSC, 7-0), Saturday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena.

The first half saw Sul Ross State and St. Mary's play on even terms the whole way.  There were 10 lead changes and nine ties.

The Hilltoppers looked to pull away, up 20-14 at the 4:31 mark.  Junior Tim Mikhailov scored in traffic to tie the game at 20-20 with 2:35 to go.  SMU scored just in front of the buzzer for a 27-25 lead at the break.

St. Mary's made a run in the second half to seal the game, going up 40-28 at the 16:12 mark.  The Lobos began to chip away.

Junior Keagan Moncrief tipped in a missed shot to make it 45-39 with 12:56 to go.  St. Mary's went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to seal the game.

The Lobos had its best performance of the season from behind the arc shooting 44.4%.  It was the second straight game at 43.8% or better.

For Sul Ross State, freshman Julien Barclay scored 12 points.  Off the bench, junior Kevon Zilaee had 12 points and senior Christian Nevarez dropped in 11 points.

For St. Mary's, Justin Britt scored 19 points.

Sul Ross State is off until Thursday, Dec. 18 when they host UT Dallas.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
