Lobos Battle Strong Against Aggies

ALPINE, Texas – Senior Cassandra Espinoza had a double-double as the Sul Ross State University volleyball team (1-10 Lone Star Conference, 3-14) lost 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23) to Cameron (3-7 LSC, 7-16), Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center. 

In the first set, Cameron came out shooting, getting up 5-1.  Sul Ross State ran off a 5-3 run to close to 8-6.

The Aggies went on an 8-2 burst to lead 16-8.  The Lobos battled back and sophomore Anna Kasper had back-to-back kills.

That made it 23-21, CU.  Cameron got the next two points to take the set.

In the second set, the Aggies and SRSU slugged it out virtually the whole way.  At 20-20, CU scored three in a row to take control.

In the third set, Cameron and Sul Ross State once again went back-and-forth.  Down 19-17, Espinoza crushed the ball off the block.  That started an 8-2 run to give the Lobos the set.

In the fourth set, SRSU led most of the way.  It seemed like a fifth set was in the future, with Sul Ross State up 20-15.

The Aggies fought back to close to 22-21.  Espinoza fired off another kill to make it 23-21.  CU reeled off four straight points to finish the match.

For Sul Ross State, Espinoza had 18 kills and 20 digs and hit .250.  while freshman Samantha Senak had nine kills and hit .360.  Junior Eliana Mata had a solid all-around match with 26 assists, three aces and 14 digs.

For Cameron, Jennifer Valdez had 15 kills and hit .361.

Sul Ross State closes the home season, Tuesday, Oct. 28, taking on UT Permian Basin.  The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
