Lobos Battle Rattlers Down To The Wire

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Sul Ross State University baseball team (0-1 Lone Star Conference, 0-1) put up a strong fight in a 3-1 loss to St. Mary's (Texas) (1-0 LSC, 1-0), Friday evening at Dickson Stadium.

St. Mary's took a 2-0 lead after three innings.  In the fourth inning, junior Joseph Binder led off with a double to left center field.

Junior Corbin Dube walked and Binder moved to third on aggressive running.  After two outs, junior Brock Rogers ripped a single to left field to score Binder.

The Rams scored in the bottom of the seventh to go up 3-1.  In each of the last three innings, the Lobos got a runner on base; however SMU held them off each time.

For Sul Ross State, junior Gage Cobb (0-1) gave up three hits, two runs with one earned and struck out eight in five inning.  Senior Rene Solis Jr. had a strong outing in relief giving up two hits, one run and walking three in three innings.

For St. Mary's, Kaleb Gauna (1-0) gave up four hits, one run, walked two and struck out eight in six innings.  Carlos Flores Jr. (1) struck out two batters in the ninth to pick up the save.

Sul Ross keeps to the road, Saturday, Feb. 1 taking on St. Mary's.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
